Leadwerks Engine 2.4 & pureLIGHT

Leadwerks Engine 2.4 is now available, featuring integration with pureLIGHT lightmapping. Leadwerks deferred dynamic lighting combines with pureLIGHT global illumination lightmaps to deliver the most advanced real-time lighting in the world.

"I'm pleased to be working with pureLIGHT Technologies", said Josh Klint, CEO of Leadwerks. "Their precomputed GI complements our dynamic lighting, and the combination is really incredible. This partnership provides our customers with an additional tool that integrates seamlessly into our pipeline, in a way no other real-time renderer has ever done."

Leadwerks Engine 2.4 also supports dynamic colored shadows for stained glass effects. Particles can cast translucent shadows that combine with solid shadows, and volumetric clouds can now cast real shadows on the ground.

They get automatically exported from pureLIGHT, but I will also post a tutorial showing how to use these effects. They're easy to use.

Just checked the pureLIGHT homepage. There are only Torque3D and Unity versions...am i missing something?

I think pureLIGHT webpage needs to add a "General" or "Leadwerks" version to their purchase page.

It will be up soon. We'll have it in our products page.

Ah, so it *is* a paid add-on to get pureLIGHT.
I just noticed the engine went up 50$ also. Is this for dynamic shadows or for general funding?

Also, you might have wanted to write "cutting-edge" instead of "cutting-age".

I think it's a good new slogan: Make cutting-age games with Leadwerks, and you feel younger again!

where is the feature page? What exactly are we paying for?

Josh Klint

28 July 2010 - 07:59 PM
You don't have to pay for version 2.4. Just run the SDK updater and it will appear in the version list.

I am amazed at the quality of this video! Josh, you really makes some good deals to further this engine along nicely!
But to make it clear. Updating leadwerks to 2.4 with the updater will give us all the new features at no extra cost?

Thanks :)

Yes.

Josh says: Yes.

Yet in a forum post Josh said LE users will get a discounted price from pureLIGHT, which indicates to get the above GI feature in the video above requires pureLIGHT and we have to pay for it. There seems to be some contradiction here.

The idea of ALL would include the GI feature from pureLIGHT, so going off your fourm post, I would say your answer should have been no instead of yes? Either that or something changed in the last 2 hours from your forum post.

pureLIGHT is not required for colored shadows, but they work nicely together.

Basically, pureLIGHT provides the secondary light bounces, and Leadwerks lighting is still used for the direct lighting. The two do not have to match exactly, and you can move Leadwerks lights around and still have a good-looking GI effect, in most cases.

I don't make any money off sales of pureLIGHT, so it's up to them. They said they would offer a discount the first month.

It doesn't really seem right to show this video using pureLIGHT features and then when people ask if we are getting the capabilities in that video (it's the same as asking 2.4) for free, to say yes. It's just confusing everyone.

Should probably say "LE 2.4 comes with pureLIGHT plugin capability!" That might make it more clear.

In the video, when the balls are falling down, pause it and look at the balls on the left side of the stairs. They look kind of flat? Not to rain on the parade but it just looks kind of funky. Almost cartoony.
